Project Description
The Village of South Elgin and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) have entered into an agreement to reconstruct the portion of McLean Boulevard between Spring Street and Stearns Road, which has been one of the Village's goals for many years. The road is currently owned and managed by IDOT as an unmarked state route. Upon completion, the road will be transferred to the Village of South Elgin. 

Along with the Project Diagram and Benefits provided in the left column, here is a summary of the planned McLean Boulevard Improvements:

  • Widening from 2 lanes to 4 lanes
  • Curbs and gutters
  • Dedicated turn lanes and deceleration lanes
  • Traffic signal at North Lancaster Street
  • Bike path connecting to regional trail system
  • Sound wall on east side of McLean Boulevard

CONTRACTOR:

  • IDOT awarded the contract to Plote Construction in May 2024

TIMING:

  • Construction is expected to start the week of June 17, 2024, with the roadway expected to be substantially complete by late November 2024.
  • Detour information will be posted 2 weeks prior to the detour being implemented - please watch for signage and notifications on the Village website and social media

CURRENT PROJECT STATUS: - This field will be updated throughout the project with the newest updates appearing at the top.


  • 7/1/24 Plote expects to begin shutting down McLean Blvd the week of July 29 to begin storm sewer installation and pavement removal work. McLean will be open to Local Traffic Only from Spring Street to Sunbury Rd from the north and from Stearns Road to South Lancaster Circle from the south. Traffic will be detoured west to Randall Road. 
  • 7/1/24 - ComEd is expecting to complete new pole installation along the western right-of-way the week of July 8 and begin stringing new lines immediately after. 
  • 7/1/24 - Nicor will complete its utility relocations by the 3rd week of July.
  • 6/19/24 - Plote has provided an updated project start date of the week of July 8, 2024. 
  • 6/4/24 - Plote has provided a project start date of the week of June 17, 2024.
  • 6/4/24 - Utility relocation work has begun ahead of the the reconstruction project. Nicor, ComEd, AT&T, Metronet and other utilities will be moving their assets out of the proposed right-of-way.
