Volunteer opportunities abound throughout the Village of South Elgin. As Village President Steve Ward says, "The Village Board and staff work hard to deliver the necessities a resident should expect - police, snow plowing, clean parks, etcetera. Volunteers add to the quality of life here and we hope more will consider giving a bit of time to their community."

Take a look at these opportunities!

Event volunteers: Many of our events throughout the year rely on volunteers. Jobs include assisting with event set-up, severe weather stations, activity stations, good bags and clean-up. With so many events, the Parks & Recreation Department will work around your schedule and availability. To learn more, contact kwascher@southelgin.com or call 847-622-0003. There is an application and waiver to complete. Some volunteer opportunities require a background check. Volunteers under 14 years old, must have a signed parental consent form. Volunteer training is available.

Adopt-a-Park: Let’s keep our community clean and safe! You and your group can Pick-A-Park or Pick-A-Spot. It will be your responsibility to maintain the area you choose. Each group can have different responsibilities from picking up litter, painting, mulching, and even planting! If you have an idea, please share and we can help you put it in motion. For details, visit southelgin.com/adopt-a-park or call 847-622-0003.

Sports Volunteers: There are hundreds of children each season that would miss out on the experience of playing sports like basketball, and volleyball if we did not have volunteer coaches. Please consider volunteerily to coach the children of your community even if you do not have a child involved. You can make a huge difference in a child’s life. To learn more, contact kwascher@southelgin.com or call 847-622-0003. There is an application and waiver to complete. Some volunteer opportunities require a background check. Volunteers under 14 years old, must have a signed parental consent form. Volunteer training is available.

Boards and Commissions:
If your volunteer thoughts lean more toward meetings and big-picture thinking, there are opportunities to serve the community via our Recreation Board, Planning & Zoning Committee, Equity & Belonging Committee and South Elgin FUNdation! An application form is required and can be found in the Forms & Applications page under the Residents category.

Volunteer with Local Groups and Organizations:
Name a non-profit organization and they're likely hungry for volunteers. Here are a few with direct links (and we'll continue adding to this list as we uncover volunteer opportunities): Anderson Humane, Food for Greater Elgin, Fox Valley Hands of Hope, Kane County Animal Control, South Elgin Food Pantry, Boys and Girls Clubs, Gail Borden Public Library and more!

Be a Volunteer Hero Every Winter!
Sometimes elite-level volunteering doesn't take more than good health, warm boots and a shovel or snowblower (cape optional). Are you one of these heroes?

  • Sidewalk Superhero: Keeps sidewalks safe and clear of snow for children to get to and from school, a disabled neighbor to board a bus and the old guy down the block who walks his beagle every morning.
  • Asphalt Avenger: Removes snow from a driveway fro a resident in need - perhaps it's the older couple next door or the neighbor recovering from knee surgery.
  • Hydrant Hero: This heroic volunteer just might save lives...even his/her own! If there's a fire hydrant in front of your home, please keep it clear of piled snow so it's accessible in the event of an emergency situation
